Chamber Concerts Signup
Chamber music is a cornerstone of the Mostly Modern experience!
Any MMF attendee may perform in up to 1-3 chamber concerts scheduled throughout the festival.
Chamber concert performances are optional; they are not required.
Chamber concert Dates
- June 12th (final deadline for submission is June 6)
- June 16th (final deadline for submission is June 9)
- June 19th (final deadline for submission is June 9)
Note that any concert may close before the stated deadline! Faculty and participants will be notified if a concert reaches capacity early.
Guidelines
These guidelines are strictly enforced. Please keep track of this so you are not overextending yourself.
- Any MMF attendee can perform in up to two pieces per chamber program
- Composers may submit up to one piece (see “pieces” below). Pieces are not guaranteed to be chosen
- Works requiring a conductor are discouraged
- Pieces for more than 5 performers must be submitted and approved before June 1
Note on Full Studio Pieces: studio pieces (for example, a flute quartet submitted by the flute faculty or a percussion ensemble piece submitted by the percussion faculty) are excluded from the above count. There will be a maximum of three studio pieces. Faculty are not required to prepare studio pieces.
Pieces
- Duration: 3-8 minutes
- Instrumentation: Chamber works, 3-8 performers possible
- Exceptional duos may be accepted
- Piano solos and solos with piano accompaniment are acceptable
- Two pianos are available if needed
- Percussion is available, but large set-ups are discouraged
- Amplification & Electronics
- We can offer limited help with amps/mics; participants and faculty are largely responsible for their own amplification and electronics as needed
- No surround sound capability
- Any amplification and electronics requests should go through MMF staff, please do not approach Skidmore College staff with requests
- Music Selection: Contemporary music by living composers preferred!
- Music over 100 years old is unlikely to be approved
- Pieces by composers under 30 years old not in attendance at the festival are less likely to be programmed
Please note that the logistics of the piece and whether it can be performed effectively are taken into consideration in the review process.
Submissions
- Please get your performers’ permission before submitting! Do not list performers who have not agreed to participate
- Submit a single request. Each participant may only submit this form once
- If you hope to participate in another piece, another member of that ensemble should submit
- One performer should submit on behalf of the whole ensemble. Please do not submit multiple requests by different members for the same work
- Each concert is prioritized differently to distribute pieces evenly:
- June 12th prioritizes string ensembles
- June 16th prioritizes wind and brass ensembles
- June 19th prioritizes mixed ensembles and those who did not perform in the first two concerts
- All three concerts will have time reserved for solo or small chamber piano works, as well as 1-2 percussion ensembles
- Please note: a request to move your group to another date is only a request, not a guarantee
- Priority will be given in the following order:
- MMF attendees performing with no faculty
- MMF attendees performing together with faculty
- MMF faculty performing with no attendees participating
Review Process
- Challenging works that require extra rehearsal time must be submitted and approved before the start of the festival
- Faculty and participants will be notified of acceptance via email with the order for each concert no later than 48 hours before the concert.
- We reserve the right to unlist chamber concert videos posted on YouTube. These are still accessible with a link, and when cross-posted on a site, they will not be publicly searchable on YouTube.
Preparation
Performing in chamber works should not impede a performer’s ability to successfully perform works that are part of the official MMF schedule.
Performers are required to provide sheet music for their performances.
Rehearsals: Performers are responsible for scheduling their own rehearsals. Official rehearsals and lessons with faculty take priority over any chamber rehearsals. Works should be able to be performed at a high level with 1-3 rehearsals plus dress rehearsal.
